About the Program

Huey’s Heroes Reading Program was designed to help readers of all ages improve their reading skills, while sharing those skills with animals in a shelter. Participants can use the program to learn the fundamental basics of reading (early stage readers), increase their ability to read to a non-judgmental listener, and/or share their love of reading with an animal that longs for and benefits from companionship. Experience shows us that when shelter animals are given attention, such as being read to, it can help socialize them, making them more adoptable.

Goals of the Program

  • To teach kids of all ages to become stronger readers, while fostering a love and understanding for animals.
  • To provide a calm, nurturing presence for shelter animals.
  • To assist young adults in fulfilling community service hours through volunteering.
  • To raise awareness of the over population in local shelters.

Current Research Shows:

  • The opportunity to interact a minimum of 10 minutes daily with a familiar human (aside from caretaker)greatly reduces the stress level of a shelter animal.
  • An animal confined to a shelter atmosphere for 3 weeks or more, greatly benefits from auditory and visual stimulation.

When You Participate

Don’t forget to bring:

  • Books to read.
  • A pillow or small blanket to sit on.
  • A parent of guardian willing to stay with each participant.

Be prepared to:

  • Stay with your children. All participants 17 years and younger are required to have a parent with them at all times.
  • Possibly read outside. Some shelters have outside kennels; please dress according to the weather.
  • Hear lots of barking! Please remind your reader that this concept is new to the animals as well and some dogs may not sit quietly during the reading session.
